Ocala Florida Snake Situation: Hi David, I live in a retirement community called Tarpon Lakeview MHP in Ocala FL. A couple of days ago I startled a snake in the back yard. It had a pattern on it, but it was dusk and I was in a hurry. I didn't think about it too much other than the fact that it had a pattern and I almost stepped on it. It took off fast and went around under my shed. Today I found out from a neighbor that there are pygmy rattlesnakes seen around here. So I looked online and sure enough, that's the snake I almost stepped on. How do I get rid of it? I'm scared it will be inside my shed or my house somewhere. I'm on a fixed income and have health problems. I don't want to die from being bitten. Does the local EMR services carry anti-venom kits for this type of snake? Can a person buy anti-venom kits to have on hand? What do I do? Management is always telling us to call Animal Control for nuisance problems but they don't come get snakes especially venomous ones. And I can't afford to pay $250 to have a licensed professional come out to remove it and I don't know how many there are. Thank you, Gina F.

The only consolation I can give you is that I get over 100 calls for pigmy rattlesnakes every year, and not once in my life have I ever actually seen a real pigmy rattlesnake with my own eyes. This is the most mis-identified snake in FL, and as far as I can tell, it's extremely rare. Many small snakes look very similar. It's almost 100percent certain that you did not actually see a pigmy. Regardless, don't try to pick them up, and you're safe.
